Any band that pulls off the lead-vocals-way-in-back-of-mix trick automatically wins me over. In Gates’ case, I was already pretty won over by the shimmering warmth of the production & the post-hardcore-minus-the-yelling-or-anger style - think of the most somber midwest emo stuff, like Algernon’s song Horror, and it’s exactly that vibe. They build it up into a giant indie/post-rock catharsis at the end too, and something about the vocal performance and the structure of the song makes it really powerful.
Based in New Brunswick, NJ. The music’s free on bandcamp: http://gates.bandcamp.com/
